Years ago, I tell all Philanthus as Ph. triangulum. But now I know taht are more species. The most common here are this, small and with much black in the abdomen. ysterday I found another GIANT!!! same size than vespula vulgaris (at first look I think that was a Vespula vulgaris) and with the abdomen almost entirely yellow. The one of the picture was photographed at Monzalbarba (Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain), 200 meters high, continental-mediterranean climate, in an habitat of river (dominated by Piptatherum miliaceum and Foeniculum vugare, with also Artemisia, Cynanchum, etc... some Tamarix trees...). The size of the wasp was about 9-10 mm (much lesser than the one taht I've seen yesterday, of 14-15 mm!  I look for an ID... Thanks! |

Philanthus triangulum. In Spain are some more species: P. pulchellus (common, see treat below), coronatus, dufourii, sculpturatrus (rare, the last only near Huelva). P. triangulum is the most common Philanthus species in Europe and occurs nearly everywhere in the South. Regards, Christian |
