Hello! I'm an undergraduate entomology major, and right now for research I've been tasked with going through my university's collection of Tephritidae and update it. However, I'm having a bit of trouble with the Dioxyna genus. For a lot of the collection, I've been using Handbook of the Fruitflies of America North of Mexico (Foote, Blanc & Norrbom 1993), which lists picciola as a synonym to sororcula. However, the Tephritidae species database by Norrbom lists this as a mistake and separates the two species again. From GBIF, I can tell that these two species are both valid in modern literature, but I'm having trouble finding a guide on how to differentiate the two. Does anyone have an idea of what paper I should be using to differentiate the two, or just some simple clues to do so? Thank you! |

From the list of synonyms and literature references in the fruit fly handbook, I suspect that true D. sororcula is not found in North America. |
