Hello,

I hope I am right with genus Eristalinus. But which species is it? (Found in Zeeland, Netherlands, last week. Size about 9-10mm).

Thanks,
Michael

Thank you for your answers. How do you distinguish E. aeneus and E. sepulchralis. The glossy back?

males are very easy to distinguish: E. aeneus-eyes meet on frons, E. sepulchralis: eyes separated. for the females the eyes is also importants for ID: on sepulchralis - eyes hairy allover, aeneus - eyes bare on lower half (M.P van Veen)
E, aeneus - the abdomen is entirely glossy black or greenish bronze; in the field it may often be recognized as having a more elongate body than that of sepulchralis (Alan E, Stubbs, steven J. Falk, 1983).
I hope this information are useful for you.
