Hi, Please help me with these mealybugs that I am not able to identify. In the beginning of June I saw them in southern Brandenburg in a pine forest, sitting on grass stalks. The bigger ones, probably females, formed eye-catching groups encircling the stalk in about its middle or higher. The first picture shows these hardly moving animals, coated in white wax. On the right side there is one of them viewed from above and below (one leg is missing). The antennae are rather short and hidden below the body. Sundew attached the following image:  [295.07Kb] |

Then, attached to the abdomen tip of many of these supposed females there were smaller ones (should be males), a bit pink below the wax, long-legged, and with very long, plumose antennae. They got nervous from the flash light, left their position and ran around over the females and on the grass stalk, but trying to get back to their original place. I thought of Pseudococcidae, but it is said that the males are winged in most taxa, and I have no key for the family. So help is greatly appreciated! In the beginning of May I saw somewhat similar females (?), without males, on stinging nettles in the same locality. However, the wax cover showed a different pattern, and the legs were not black, but yellowish brown. Can be said more than Pseudococcidae? Thanks, Sundew
