This fellow was hovering over my head as if I were his (or her) mate. Xanthogramma pedissequum? I'm not sure the second photo is showing the same species.

Yes, indeed a Xanthogramma, and I would think a male of X. pedissequum, although they are working on the genus to split it up in several more species!
