Hello, I still have 3 drone flies (Eristalinae) from different locations that look very much the same. I can not decide the Tribus: Pipizini or Rhingiini When I compared with photos, it could be Heringa or Cheilosa. Location: Germany, NE-Hesse, Hessisch-Lichtenau: Hoher Meißner, 590m asl., 22.05.2016 Thank you for your time! To discriminate between Pipizini and Rhingiini (or Cheilosiini) you need good lateral pictures of the head. In Pipizini the face is flat and covered in long, drooping hairs. There is no central prominence and no distinctly projecting mouth margin. Most Pipizini members are hardly identifiable from photos. Cheilosia of the Rhingiini has a bulbous face with a "nose" above the mouth. So this picture shows a typical Cheilosia, not a Heringia of Pipizini. I am afraid more cannot be said, at least I am not able to. As Jürgen already wrote, Syrphidae pictures should be posted in their own subforum. Regards, Sundew |

Pipizini have a simple profile head (flat, withous facial kno ... so, this is a female Cheilosia sp. |
