On behalf of an Ukrainian researcher (Mykitchak Taras of the Institut of ecology of Carphathions NASU) I would like to ask which Ephydra species might occur in the western part of Ukraine. He found some larvae initially identified as Setacera, but in my opinion belong to Ephydra. However, the number of species in this part of the country cannot be very high. He found the larvae in April in the reservoir of Dombrovskyy salt open-cast (Ivano-Frankivsk region) with mineralization of the water about 80-100 g/l. Any help in the Ephydra spec. fauna from this area would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure whether anyone has done a faunistic study of Ukrainian ephydrids, but neighbouring countries (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania) have Ephydra glauca, macellaria, murina, riparia and scholtzi (as well as Setacera aurata, breviventris, micans and trina). Perhaps Tadek or Cranefly can help further.
E.murina and riparia have occurred in large numbers in Crimea. (See Przhiboro and Shadrin, 2012 Mass occurrence of flies of the genus Ephydra (Diptera: Ephydridae) at the coastline zone of hypersaline coastal lagoons in the Eastern Crimea)
