This Rhagionidae was taken in an apple orchard in SW France in May/June 2006, and it's causing us some headaches. When just looking at the image one would say that it is Ptiolina, but... I have not found any key, or description, that would put the possible size of Ptiolina between 6 and 7 mm and that was the actual size of this specimen. In most keys the hind tibial spurs of Ptiolina are mentioned as tiny or absent. Her are two distinct spurs, albeit small ones. For the clever ones, who then find another genus in their keys: no, it is not Spania, as that is even smaller than Ptiolina. It is a Ptiolina; the size is not unusual for this genus. It should, however, have only one hind tibial spur. If it has two, then the second is reduced. |
