Hello all, Would it be possible to identify this female Syrphidae? (Genus, Species)? Those pictures were taken in a marsh near home (Quebec, near Vermont). Thanks alot Michel (from Quebec, Canada; near Vermont) Mes Parcours Nature: http://parcours.p... |

Hello, here in Europe this would be an Eristalis tenax female. The species is distributed worldwide, but I don't know if there are additional similar species in North America. John Carr wrote: Photos of all Eristalis known from Ontario are here: http://www.canaco...stalis.htm Thanks! I think the hairy bands on the eyes are distinctive enough to say it's E. tenax. Interesting, that E. interrupta is listed as 'uncommon' for Ontario. Here it is one of the most numerous Eristalis, more abundant than arbustorum, which listed as 'common and widespread' for Ontario. But both species are nearly ubiquitous here and live in the same habitats.
