I observed this fly yesterday in my garden on parsnip. Medium sized. What is it?

It's a male of Elomyia lateralis.
Look in the first pic what happens with the apical crosvein, when approaching the wing margin: it turns back !
(I admit, difficult to see if you haven't seen it before)

Eeek - I see what you mean, I saw the vein but I thought it was a trick of the angle Sad The faint wing colour is similar to female Ectophasia, which confused me. I can see, I need a bigger palaearctic collection! Wink Is this species rare in mainland Europe?

It's a Mediterrean species, not so common.
