I photographed this one today on bramble leaves beside a canal, in the West Midlands. Can anyone hazard a guess as to its identity?

My guess would be anthomyid, but since that does not count for much, you better wait till someone else comes up with something better.
I do not think you stumped us all, it is just that this is not the easiest group to identify from pictures (as a rule) so you need to wait until someone knowledgeble passes this thread. Pfft

I would guess Muscidae, possibly Mydaea, but that is a guess! Wink
