Hi, Can anyone assist with an Id for this fly please ? It is similar to Cerodontha hennigi in the gallery except this one has dark femur instead of yellow. The pictures were taken in my garden in Surrey in Southern England on 19th May 2007, and it looks as though the fly is ovipositing on the leaves of a Fox Glove (Digitalis). approx length was 5-6mm. Regards Chas Nb: as it appears not to be Cerodontha I have changed the subject to Id assistance ChasMacey attached the following image: [107.23Kb] Edited by ChasMacey on 23-05-2007 18:43 www.cgm-gardenlife.co.uk |

Hi Nikita, I don't have a very good picture of the Antennae but from this one it does not lok as though it is unusual. Chas ChasMacey attached the following image: [56.57Kb] Edited by ChasMacey on 22-05-2007 13:51 www.cgm-gardenlife.co.uk |

As there does not appear to be anything unusual about the antennae that rules out Cerodontha so can anyone suggest a possible Id please ? Regards Chas www.cgm-gardenlife.co.uk |

Phytomyzinae, near Phytomyza. Reliable identification of most species requires a known host plant and/or examination of male genitalia.

Kahis, Photo 2 seems to show the fly ovipositing, given that the plant is Digitalis purpurea could this be Phytomyza digitalis or is examination of the male genitalia still required ? are there others that also use Digitalis as a host ? Regards Chas www.cgm-gardenlife.co.uk |
