 Spilomyia manicata or S. saltuum?

Today I found this big (ca. 15 mm) Spilomyia-fly on Daucus carota. I think this is Spilomyia manicata (tarsus 1 black) but I would to have it confirmed? Thanks in advance! Hello Tjiske, Spilomyia are hard to identify, despite the fact that they are big and brightly coloured. The black front tarsae is a feature shared by S. digitata and S. saltuum. S. manicata should have front tibia for more then half darkened. That seems to be the case. The anterior bands on T3 and 4 are, however slightly, interrupted. Which would plead for S. saltuum. There seem to be too much spots on the sides of the thorax, but its hard to make out. If that is the case this would again plead for S. saltuum. The latter is unfortunately the only species of this magnificent genus I have any experience with. Hope this helped... Greetings, Ectemnius |

I am sorry I didn't react on your answer earlier Ectemnius. I only saw it today. I had placed the fly later in the diptera adults forum and got a reply that it could well be Spilomyia manicata, but the person said he wasn't an expert. http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=63945 So I will leave it undecided and hope that I will see the species again this year.
