A rather distinctive small Empidid with metallic colors.

Could also be a Hybotid.

Hi, Probably, this is Leptopeza flavipes (Meigen, 1820) (Hybotidae). Cheers, Igor Edited by igor on 07-05-2007 18:29 |

Thx Igor, This should be the only L. species in Hungary. The Hybotid fauna has recently been thoroughly studied by Papp and Foldvari, who described several new species from Hungary a few years ago. Gabor Keresztes Japan Wildlife Gallery Carpathian Basin Wildlife Gallery |

Yes, I have this paper. BTW, unidentified Hybotidae on Carpathian Basin Wildlife Gallery mostly belong to Platypalpus and a few Hybos. All the best, Igor |

Thx Igor, I do not usually post images of these two genera, because species level identification is rarely (if ever) possible. I renamed the images. Can you check the three images that are still named Unidentified Hybotidae, whether they are also Platypalpus spp. Gabor Keresztes Japan Wildlife Gallery Carpathian Basin Wildlife Gallery |

Gabor: You are right, unfortunately it is very difficult to identify Platypalpus to species level after images. Your last three images are Platypalpus. Probably I know some of your Japanese species. Regards, Igor |

Igor, thx for your help. If you know other species in my Japan gallery, just leave a comment. After this male I made photos of a female. Gabor Keresztes Japan Wildlife Gallery Carpathian Basin Wildlife Gallery |

Hi Gabor, Sorry, but your two new images are Empis (Lessempis) nigritarsis Meigen, 1804 (female). Anyway, good record and nice images. All the best, Igor BTW: I forgot that there is a nice Adrian's image of this species on the Gallery. You could compare (male) and add your female for a couple Edited by igor on 15-05-2007 16:54 |

Thx Igor, I would have never guessed that my females are not the Hybotids. The jizz looked right for Leptopeza flavipes female, though I was concerned that the antennae look quite different. Now that you id-ed the flies I see more differences
