Hello,
I met the flies in May in Germany, Saxony at the same place. Is ID possible? Epistrophe or Eupeodes?
Thanks,
Marion

Hello Marion Friedrich,

The orange stripe at the side of the thorax give it away as Epistrophe.
They do not seem to be the same specimen? The specimen shown in the second photo has the angle of the eyes smaller as the specimens in the first and third photo.

Greetings,

Ectemnius

Hello Ectemnius,
thank you. for defining the genus as Epistophe.
You are right, on the second pictures is another fly. After posting I noticed that I sent pictures of two different individuals. I thought that they belong to the same species, and did not notice the difference in the angle of the eyes. Here is an additional image of the fly on the 2nd picture for comparison. Is species determination possible?

Greetings,

Marion

Hello Marion Friedrich,

The second and fourth photo show a nice specimen of a male Epistrophe flava. Nice species and nice photo's.

The first and thrid photo show a specimen with the wider angle of the eyes is a specimen with conspicuous black frons. However the abdominal bands are nor conform the two species that show that feature. The straight front edge of the band makes me think male E. melanostoma.

Greetings,

Ectemnius

Hello Ectemnius,

many thanks for ID. E. flava is a new species for me.

Greetings,

Marion
