Hi * locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL * date - 2007.04.22 * size - 10 mm (large fly) * habitat - woodland, near river * substrate - air  * temperature - 30 ?C This fly tried to bite me, but I catched it first It is a tabanid female - so she wanted sucked me..  the male only like sucks nectar, not blood.  It is a very impressive fly to see moving and it is alive yet. Haematopota sp. (perhaps pluvialis, but I don?t know the characters for species in Haematopota sp. Yes, thank you. I'm not sure, it is either ocelligera or pluvialis. the lights ad colouration are so varying, depending on the flash, that I've got the feeling I've been tricked by some pictures (the scutellum is quite white in some, while quite dark in the last ...). So, it might be pluvialis after all. Sorry... Theo |
