I have struggled to find much on smaller Eastern European cockroaches though I do sometimes come across these when leading Botanical tours and they are often attracted to light at windows etc. This one though was found in the woods above Bansko in Bulgaria on 26 June 2013. Body length is 8mm. Any suggestions regarding identification would be very greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Alan

I would say Ectobius sylvestris, many forms outthere, see these:

check number 3 (7 mm body) for comparison with yours. (did not check no. 1 anywhere yet)

Many thanks. I was concerned that the literature that I have that includes E. sylvestris also includes a number of related species that look superficially quite similar.
