I'm asking ID for this midge for someone else who took the picture in May in the Netherlands. It was not collected. I guess it is Procladius sp?

Probably in the Thienemannimyia genus group (Pentaneurini). If you have access to Edwards (1929: British non-biting midges) or Fittkau (1962: Die Tanypodinae) see if Thienemannimyia woodi (originally described in Pentaneura) looks like this.

I don't have any of these books, but no rings on the tibiae and one apical ring on the femora fits T. woodi, although I don't know T. pseudocarnea. This species is described in Murray (1976), but I don't have this book. It's a pity this one isn't collected, because T. woodi should be new to the Netherlands.

I acquired a copy of Fittkau's 1962 revision. At the time there were only two specimens of T. woodi known, both pinned in the British Museum and he could not prepare them properly for examination. He translated Edwards' description of color of T. woodi into German: (I may have added typos copying from the book.) Färbung: (nach Edwards 1929) Kopf bräunlich, Mundpartien schwarz. Antennen dunkel, distal aufgehellt. Thorax gelb, bereift. Mesonotalbinden kaum dunkler als das Mesonotum. Mesonotalborsten blaß. Abdomen weißlich. Sg II-VI mit dunkelbraunen, oralen Bändern, Sg VII und VIII fast ganz dunkelbraun. Hypopygium gelblich. Beine gelblich, die Femora dicht am Ende mit einem dunklen, schmalen, braunen Ring. Flügel mit einer Zeichnung aus dunklen Borsten. Ein dunkler Schatten in der Mitte von R5, ein Flecker in M und ein besonders dunkler auf Cu1. Part of his description of T. geijskesi, which is probably related and keys out in the same couplet: Färbung: Weißlich-gelb, auf dem Thorax nahezu keine, auf dem Abdomen jedoch gut ausgebildete Zeichnung. Mesonotalbinden blaß gelblich-bräunlich bis auf einen oralen braunen Rand an den Om-Binden. Scutellum und Postnotum weißlich, Mesopleuren hell, Mesosternum etwas bräunlich. Flügel weißlich, ohne Zeichnung, die Adern und adernahen Bereiche etwas dunkel. Beine weiß, etwas dunkel gefärbt vorletztes und letztes Tarsenglied. Femur mit einem kräftig braunen Ring von 2-3facher Gliedbreite. Abdomen weißlich. Tergit I ohne Zeichnung, II-VI mit einem ziemlich gleichmäßig breiten Band, das etwa das orale Segmentviertel bedeckt. Von II nach VI nimmt seine Breite etwas ab. Im Gegensatz zu laeta-letiginosa wird es nicht von drei, sondern nur von zwei lateral miteinander verschmelzenden Flecken gebildet. Es ist deshalb auf der Medianen nicht verbreitert, sondern hier in der Regel durch einen schmalen, hellen Streifen underbrochen. Tergite VII und VIII ganz braun, mit einem schmalen, hellen analen Streifen. Hypopygium hell. My ID is Thiennemyia cf. woodi. |
