I am wondering if this is Sciomyzidae or Scatophagidae. Photographed today at Leerdam, Netherlands. Appr. 8 mm long.

i think this is not Scyomizidae, but Heleomyzidae.

I think you are right, Jorge. I mix these families up all the time Sad But one day I will learn.
Could it be narrowed down to genus level from this single photograph or would that be a mission impossible?

I'd say that most probably it is Tephrochlamys, but there is Andrzej for final judgement...

It is a Tephrochlamys speciesn , probably T. rufiventris but the ID would be more precisely by the lateral aspect ;
