Hello all!

Before asking my question, I will introduce myself briefly. I live in Brussels, Belgium. I speak french (by the way, sorry for the language). I'm 36 years old and I'm interested by general dipterology but mainly by two families: Tachinidae and Oestrida (beginner). I'm glad to join this forum

Here is my question: I would be interested by the third volume of Contributions to a manual of palearctic diptera (higher Brachicera) but I can't find any details about the content, to be sure it's worth buying it nor the price and place where I can buy this book. Sad

Anyone has these informations? Thank you for your help

Hi,

The book is very nice, if you are interested in Diptera in gereneral. The first volume will give you introduction to Diptera anatomy. The second and third volume go through the families and the third volume is a supplementary volume, where some of the families that are missing from the second and third volume are missing. In all maybe 90% of the families are covered, but there are many notable exceptions (for example Anthomyiidae if I remember correctly). I do not remember whether the families that you mention are in vol 3 or 4.

These volumes will include keys down to the genus level, so for determining at species level they are pretty much useless. Nevertheless I think these books are worth buying if you are really into it and willing to pay the relatively high price (I think a volume is aroun 2-3oo USD, clearly too expensive for me).A cheaper option is to photocopy parts of the book (families that you are interested in). In Hungary this is legal for private purposes, but the distribution of it or copying entire books is illegal.

Thank you Gabor!

Since you come from Hungary, maybe you know which institution or bookshop sells this manual... There is nothing on internet!

I think the Akad?mia Kiad? printed the volumes, try to do a google search. Also if I am right, an english web based book shop specializing in selling scientific literutre may have it, but again please use google.

Hi,

You can find volume 2, 3, and 4 on the site of Pemberley Books:

https://colorado..../search.pl

Perform a search on "Papp" (in the author field of the search page) and you will find these three volumes.
