Hi, Is this Rhamphomyia ? I posted photos of a similar fly earlier in the year see http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=5&thread_id=4714&pid=21021#post_21021 But this one has a proboscis that is much shorter than the one in the earlier thread (approx 1/3rd of the length) Photo was taken around the same time of year though on 3rd September 2006 in my garden in Surrey Southern England but size was not recorded. Presumably Rhamphomyia variabilis, male.
