This large fly was photographed on the east coast of Australia in the middle of winter (june) but still warm weather for us. It sat on a sandstone rock for quite a while, then suddenly took off straight up in the air and flew swiftly away. It is about2 to 2 1/2 cent long. Any idea what it is? |

I would guess sub family Ommatiinae, with that extremely robust and hunched thorax. If I could see plumose antennae, I would be more confident.
