This greenbottle fly has a gap in the bristles down the centre of its scutum. Is it a Neomyia sp?

Photos taken in Barnard Castle, UK on 2010-08-07.

Thankyou Nikita.

I hadn't thought of Eudasyphora so I looked it up in RES Handbook Vol 10 Part 4b. Diptera Cyclorrhapha Calyptrata, Section b Musicidae by E C M D'Assis Fonseca (online copy here: http://www.royens.../index.htm), where it appears as Dasyphora on pages 10-11.

I also found this, rather blurry, side view which I took at the same time as the above photos.

I now think the fly might be E. cyanella for the following reasons:

1. It seems to have a pale anterior spiracle.

2. The anterior bristle on the middle tiba seems longer than the longest ventral bristle (although it is difficult to judge from the angle).

3. The colour is more greenish with a dull thorax, than shiny blue.

4. On one of the original photos there is a faint suggestion of hairs on the eyes (though I might just be over-interpreting noise).

According to the key by Cuny (1980), female E. cyanella has "parafacial plates golden dusted and wider than half width of frons" while female E. cyanicolor has "parafacial plates silvery dusted and narrower than half width of frons".
