Location: Hungary Date: 2006-07-12 Size: 10-12 mm Habitat: On the wall of my house After I had came home I saw these flies thronging on the wall. Probably they were looking for a warmer cranny where they can hide. If you ask me I would say to you it is Calliphora vicina. Is it correct? eguzki attached the following image: [139.56Kb] |

I think so, this looks exaclty like the males of C. vicina that I observed in Hungary. Though the top view is not the best, you should always attempt to do a lateral shot at all flies, particularly if it is a Calyptrate fly. Lateral view is more informative for Calliphora sp.

Hint of red "cheek/jowl" face character of vicina. Compare with the dark, almost black "cheek/jowl" of vomitoria - see the faces in the gallery. Two equally common flies similar in almost all other respects.I think the hint is enough, (it could just be red hairs on black cheeks and therefore vomitoria) to say 90% vicina but as Gabor says try for lateral and head shots wherever possible. The other character that shows in the photo is the pale basicosta - a feature of vicina
