I am almost ashamed that I simply have no idea what this is. Very cooperative, got good pictures from all angles but I am too short of time to prepare all the stuff. Is it possible to ID it just with this shot? If more are required, I will post them. Taken in the mountains N of Madrid on the 21rst May 2011. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! Probably Merodon geniculatus. But it is a species complex... so difficult. You could make it more easy for me if you have a very good lateral shot, so I can see the hind femur and tibia very well... |

So good to see you back, André!! Thanks a lot for your suggestion. Unfortunately, the only lateral shot showing the hind leg shows a lot of pollen too! Grrrrrr! I am adding a shot of another female specimen in the same area. I am pretty sure it has to be the same species. I also have shots of the male, just in case that helps, only that the males weren't so cooperative Piluca_Alvarez attached the following image: [145.21Kb] |

I just want to see the shape/size of the hind tibia, so some pollen is no problem. And yes, if you have some more males, from the same day/location, it might help. PS: good to see YOU back |

I think my best shot of the femur and tibia was the previous one but I have another view that might help.

And a picture of the male, much smaller than the female.

Pic # 6 is NOT the male of the previous females! It is Merodon unicolor! A very nice and small species. Pic # 5: remains difficult to see what I want to see. Don't worry, keep the ID as M. geniculatus, that's very safe |
