Hi,
Roskozny talks about a feature he calls the "post tergum" in his Feno-scandia Sciomyzidae key, but does not illustrate it or include it in a glossary. My guess is that he is referring to a part of the abdomen, but which part precisely? post what? Can anyone advise? Angry

I have not got the key here, so I cannot check. Can you repeat the whole phrase and indicate page number?

Hi Paul,
It might help if I used the right phrase!
I should have said pro-sternum (not post tergum - there is no such phrase). My memory let me down badly. I think pro-sternum refers to the abdominal segments that preceed the genitalia. However I am not really sure about this and it is a character that Roskozny uses quite frequently.

I will get the book out tonight and provide more accurate references.

The prosternum is a small plate on the ventral midline between the fore coxae. It is brifly mentioned in the text (Thorax, pg. 15) but not illustrated.

Poorly defined terminology is extremely irritating. Spencer Agromyzid volumes of FES are among the worst offenders.

Thanks Kahis,
We could do with a drawing of this feature for the Diptera.info glossary. Any volunteers?

Quick and (maybe) dirty: prosternum.
