Here is a photo from Stéphane Brule in French Guiana. Could anyone confirm whether I have guessed the ID correctly?

Thanks Eric ... I am sure you have corrected me from dives to clavipes in the past - I just couldn't remember the alternative They really are lovely asilids and they seem to be relatively common too.
