 mysql server has gone away

Several times over the past week part of a page has been replaced with the error message "mysql server has gone away" repeated about three times. Reloading the page usually works. |

It happens when the load on the server is rather high. Usually it goes away on its own, otherwise I restart the mysql server and then we are cool again.
