A beautiful spider, the prettiest I have ever met! 21st January 2010 rainforest Paraty-Brazil on a rock in the river. Size without its very long legs was about 1cm if I remember well.. Thank you! Myriam

A fantastic creature indeed! It is Goniosoma discolor -Conyleptidae! Janet Rowley (blowave) has found its ID!  I've changed the title..Do the males also have 'boxing gloves' like with spiders? Edited by bonitin on 01-01-2011 17:48 |

no, not at all. Harvestmen have a completely different reproduction system. The have a penis, which is extremely long. For studying it, which is often important, you have to "cut" them out of their body.

The family Gonyleptidae is pretty huge. To be frank I do not know genus Goniosoma well. There are more than 20 species, that is described species. Maybe it is risky to say which species it is based on a photo, but, on the other hand, maybe it is not. I will ask it to some Brazilian friends.
