Somebody commented to me recently that it was not worth attempting to collect lepidoptera in a malaise trap as they were usually too damaged. This not necessarily so. The apparatus pictured is made from food storage containers and collects all insects in perfect condition. It also kills the ants and geckoes that come to feed on the catch. Bottom container holds industrial ammonia (25%). I find that here in Townsville it needs to be topped up every two days. Ammonia breaks down some glues. Silicone based glues are OK.

Hello,
How can you check the species and how can you get them out from the traps ?

Hi Lesu,
Easy as each container is threaded. Bottom container has its lid glued to the bottom of the next container. Middle container contains the dead insects, its lid is glued by white stuff. Just unscrew container.
Sorry about the late reply the automatic notification wasn't working.
Cheers, Graeme
