My friend Marcello Romano has asked me to ask you for your opinion on this magnificent Tabanidae (we think) measuring about 30 mm photographed yesterday in a wettish area of Sicily. Thanks from him and me, Sarah. |

Hi Sarah, Amazing ! This is a female of Therioplectes tunicatus. The genus is easily recognized by the white and slightly swollen tibiae. Why it is tunicatus, you can read in the recent revision of the genus in Studia Dipterologica. (Short answer: only species on Sicily). Therioplectes are not so common. Question: are you really sure the picture was taken yesterday ? Since Therioplectes are distinctly spring species. So if you could check this, please... And could you email me the exact location ? Thanks for the pictures and your effort Theo Zeegers |

The photos seems to be taken the 20th May (filename).
