Carissimi, this magnificent large Asilidae was photographed by a friend of mine, Francesco Maxia, in Sardinia recently. Can anyone help at least with a genus? Thanks from me and from Francesco, Sarah.

Hi Sarah This is Asilinae, of which only three species are recorded for Sardinia. Of these, I don't think it is Machimus or Tolmerus, which leaves Premochtherus sardus. This answer presupposes that this asilid has been recorded on the island before, and that the record was incorporated into Fauna Europaea. Thanks tons Tony. I've passed the answer on to Francesco, so he can do a bit of local research as well, Sarah. |
