A rather big fly on Pinus pinaster.

Is it possible to ID beyond family level?

Missed your post, Lepto.

Thanks for your ID, although there is no count of the species you mention in Spain.

Bedankt, Lepto.Smile

Also have a look at Neomochtherus melanopus. It is very difficult to determine species from a single picture. Keys are hardly applicable this way. Best bet is a local expert or real oneSmile

Thanks for taking your time, Reinoud.Smile

I will consider this species too, but I know the extreme difficulties using photos as only means in ID.Frown

Is there a cientific name for "Machinus group"?

Thanks anyway,
André

I think the group consists of: Machimus + Tolmerus and Neoepitriptus. Maybe there are more genusses (what happened to Epitriptus for instance) let an expert react too. These genusses are very similar in appearance and form a group because of it. Probably it will not end here. Research is going on.

André, to make things worseGrin ,please note that i am now more convinced that it is a Neomochtherus cf melanopus. Neomochtherus is not part of the Machimus group!
