Tiny Fly, Bright Red Eye

This fly measured 3.5 mm from the front of the face to the rear of the wings.

The fly was on a squash plant, in an open area but near woodlands, in West Virginia USA. The date was 29 July 2006.

ID help appreciated!

Might be Drosophilidae. I'm curious what the specialists will make of this species.
