Today I saw this rather small (say 5 mm) fly on Aegopodium podagraria. It reminded me of Solieria pacifica - but it also differs from that species. 1. In my recollection, Soliera was bigger 2. I saw Soliera end June, 1 month later than this year, while 2007 had a record hot spring. So Soliera seems to be a full summer species; to day might be too early. 3. Soliera has a uniform ground color. This fly had the same color at the abdomen, but head and thorax were greyish, giving a strong impression of separate colors for thorax and abdomen - much stronger than when you look at the photo's. Additional info: Amstelveen, the Netherlands. Grass land with lots of flowers, pond and ditch nearby, as are shrubs and trees. Clay soil topped with sand. Definitely a male Solieria. Given the locality, must be pacifica. If you can get a glimp of the tarsi.... Theo |
