It looks a bit like Trithemis aurora, but I'm not sure if this species occurs in Africa - there are many other African species of Trithemis, but someone may be able to help.

Thanks tony. Some other expert id'd it as Trithemis annulata, and these are found in TZ. Could it be?

Yes, that is very probable. Trithemis annulata is also known as the Violet Dropwing
