Hello! Last year on 03. May I found this Syrphidae in a lime area (dry meadow) in the Spessart-Highlands (Bavaria / 500m). I think, it's a Merodon species. M. equestris? Yes it is Merodon, but probably not M equestris. This is a difficult genus. You'll need a specimen and a good key. Try Van Veen's Hoverflies of NW Europe.
