What's the ID of this all black syrph, a species of the family Eristalinae with the shape on the wings ??

The head and the wing surely make it a Merodon. Near Metz, I would indeed say Merodon equestris, which is known for its colour varieties.

separated eyes and a characteristic tip of the abdomen - its a female.

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
