This large fly , wingspan about 25-30mm in flight, flies with a loud buzzing and hovers before resting with wings spread on blades of grass close to the ground. It seems to be able to furl its wings somewhat as sometimes the wings are quite narrow when resting but at other times they are fully deployed and have quite a rounded appearance to the trailing edge. Trev - where in Queensland? Tropical FNQ, south-east or western? I've never seen it before and I won't know the answer even when you tell me where you photographed it, but as an ex-Queenslander I am curious. Susan |
