Hello Forum,

the following two pictures are taken on August 4th 2008 in Hagen, NRW, Germany in the near of an alder marshland, 175 msm, the plant is Cirsium arvense.

Is it a Phaonia spec.? Is an ID possible?

Best regards, Josef

This is Calliphoridae. I suspect it is Pollenia, but might be Bellardia or Melinda.

Definitely not Phaonia - vein M is bent.

This is not Pollenia. Around Melinda/Onesia/Bellardia.

I opted for Pollenia because I thought the strongly tessellated abdomen was more reminiscent of Pollenia than M/O/B, even though I could see no sign of wavy golden hair on the thorax. What are your reasons for going the other way Gabor? You have a better eye than me for these species I think.

There are two reasons. First the abodmen has a distinct greenish metallic shine, which Pollenia sp do not have. Second, the thoracic pattern is off for most Pollenia, and as you mentioned there is no golden hair to be seen.
