I saw this male (yeh, I learned it!) in a garden of a farm in Drenthe, the Netherlands. Surrounded by mostely agricultural fields, but also some cows etc. It's Hybomitra, so probably difficult. But I was striken by the tapering abdomen, a form I don't see in Stubbs & Drake. Any chance at an ID?

It is either H. muehlfeldi or H. ciureai. The greyish first antennal segment favours the first. However, the abdominal spots reaching tergite 4 and the time in the year (suppossing it is from this week) clearly favours the last. So.... Theo |

This one shows a bit more. And yes, it was from 3 August. Stubbs & Drake mention for muehlfeldi 'the black median band has conspicuous grey triangles.' These are not that conspicuous in this specimen. Does that add in favor of H ciureai? Stubbs had little material to go on. The dusting on the scutellum suggests ciureai. That's how far I'll go. If you have collected it, look at the size of the upper facets in the eye (picture is not sharp enough). Theo |
