I took the following shot of the same couple a few seconds before the photo above (flash in strobe mode @30Hz during 1/10s => 3 exposures):  Larger view here:http://farm4.stat...af62_b.jpg Note how the male reaches out to show the female his black tarsi-ornaments! Another side note: If you've ever tried shooting these flies using pre-flash ttl-metering you know that you will end upp with mostly empty frames since their reaction time is so fast they manage to escape in the short span between pre- and actual flash. While slightly frustrating I've found this to be quite impressive. So the reason I had the flash in repeating mode was to try to capture these blazing take offs. This seems to be the typical take off pattern (50Hz strobe ? you do the math!):  Best regards, John |

Yes, This Doli is Neurigona quadrifasciata. Demonstration of ornamented tarsi to female is very specific to this species. I saw Pogonin's film with the species mating.
