Hello Forum,

this larva (?) was in a drop of brownish water (left part), that was fixed on a leaf of Phalaris arundinacea. It became visible, when I removed the water (right part).

Does anybody know, what kind of insect it is? A larva of coleoptera?

Hagen, NRW, Germany, alder marshland, 175 msm, June 17th 2008

Best regards, Josef

It looks like either a chrysomelid or a weevil, though I don't know any that feed on Phalaris.

Oulema melanopa feeds on Phalaris. This larva looks very like it!

Definitely Oulema melanopa, they cover themselves in their own excrement for defence, and there are a lot about this year leaving little splodges on my jeans as I walk through wheat crops!!
