This last weekend I was in germany in the neighbourhood of Muenster. Here, in an abandoned stone quarry, I found thousands of specimens of Penthetria funebris. This was formerly in the family Bibionidae, but now it's in the new family Pleciidae, with only 1 european species: this one! The male has reduced wings, the female not but still they both are running around on the ground! I know this species was already on diptera.info, but here are some other pictures. This species is relatively common in North-Eastern Hungary. I also collected specimens both males and females. This species seems to inhabit damp forests especially around slowly flowing mountain streams. Initially they seem to be quite scarce, but if you spot one, there will be many more.
