hi flyforum,

Today I found a rather typical Bibio sp. which I didn't see before..
Costa and wingpattern is rather obvious.
Legs are totaly black, except for the spines on the legs, which are tiny red.
Thorax is realy black even so on other parts many black hairs.
Eyes are redish?, mostly I saw Bibio sp. with blackish eyes?
Legs are strongly build, Metatars III is elongated, long (3 or even 4x as long as width)

I think it is Bibio varipes, but I have not seen any picture of a male before to compare with?
If I look at the wingpatern of female B. varipes, I can except that this is the male..

Or are there more options for this Bibio?

Is this a common species in the Netherlands?

Doesn't varipes have pale legs? I just have a female here and it is very orange everywhere. If I try to key this I am getting to Bibio anglicus - are you near to a large river? Smile

hi Chris,

I think B. varipes got also black legs.
If you can disqualify B. varipes, it must be B. anglicus I think.
Last year I found also a male here in Amsterdam (no river at all..)
And it is quite rare..

Anglicus indeed.

Recorded from Amsterdam last year.
By you, Robert, if I remember correctly ? (Something like Amsterdamse bos or Amstelveen, it is not in my database, however).

No river at all, well, what about the Amstel ?

Could you please provide locality in more detail, so that I may add the records to my database ?

Thanks

Hello Theo,

For specific details of the place/locality, you can read and see it in:

http://waarneming...id=4231462

http://waarneming...id=2401699
Both places are in the North-area of the Amsterdam forest (let's say start 'Bosbaan'Wink
Bosbaan in no river, more a big canal.
It is a rather distance of the Amstel, but 'De nieuwe Meer', a big lake in the near surrounding can play a role?

Looking further at these 'milkey-white' wings and spines of almost equal size..(femur I) I am considering that this 'B. anglicus' is a B. leucopterus as well!

Note that the pterostygma looks more black and is rather more sharp than the other B. leucopterus sp. before on this forum..?
But I can see a bit blurred...!
I'' place a detail of the wing and its pterostygma.
