Subcosta's apical half is straight - female Fannia, I think, but I cannot find the combination of black femora and yellowish abdomen in the key.

I've found my wrong turn in the key - black legs do not exclude yellow abdomen! But I don't think it's F. canicularis which should have 3 dark stripes on the scutum and the abdomen only yellow at base. But your fly seems to be a case for the expert: "Parafacials with 3-4? strong setae and numerous setulae" lead directly to Fannia latifrontalis in the key. This seems to be very rare and is not listed in Faunaitalia... Edited by eklans on 12-10-2025 16:40 Greetings, Eric |

Still inclined towards F. canicularis... What do you think?![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() PS: Correct reference at p. 28 is: "figure 9g (p. 69)". Scias characterem non constituere genus, sed genus characterem. |

That is the key I'm using, too. And with your frontal view I'm nearly convinced of F. canicularis. The lateral stripes on the scutum maybe faded in this specimen. But I am not able to decide whether the yellow abdomen is ok for the species. See the female here: https://www.spess...s/4/4.html Greetings, Eric |

F. clara's abdomen is yellow, but I cannot find a complete dorsal image including the apical part. But it looks promising!

At least it's very close to F. clara, I think - but I have by far not enough experience with Fannia to make a reliable suggestion - sorry.
