Hi, Is it possible to identify these flies that have eaten a caterpillar of Calliteara pudibunda? 2 of the 4 former inhabitants of the caterpillar emerged today or yesterday from their pupae. I found the young caterpillar in a forest in Germany, Saxony on 27.07.25. Hello, I need to correct myself. The caterpillar was eaten by 5 flies. Another pupa had hidden in the webbing of Calliteara pudibunda. In total, 4 flies emerged from the 5 pupae, one of which had problems emerging and could not unfold its wings. This one looks different from the other three. Is it a female or another species? Hi Marion Clearly a Carcelia, and host suggests strongly C. gnava, also supported by your photo's. This species is hardly ever seen in the field, typically a 'reared' species. Theo |
