Hello, this 10 mm fly was flying slowly near the ground on a large windbreak clearing (northwest Germany) and landed on a dry twig directly above a colony of the ant Formica sanguinea under an old tree stump. As I read, there are 5 Microdon species here in northwest Germany, some of them are indistinguishable as adulti. But they visit different ant species for their larvae, most of them from the genus Lasius. From those coming into question via the look, Microdon analis uses Lasius platythorax as a host, but Microdon major uses Formica sanguinea! Am I now right with the conclusion, that I found Microdon major?
