Hello to all, does anybody know this kind of horsefly? It found me at the slopes of the Cerro Chato, neighbouring mountain of the Arenal in Northwest-Costa Rica at about 800-900m above sea-level. Length about 12-15mm. The unusual position of its left wing was caused by my defensive reaction... Greetings Rupert |

Scione sp. The pilose eyes and long proboscic suggest Scionini, and the closed M3 cell and patterned scutum show it is Scione. I can't suggest a species, but several Scione in Costa Rica, in particular Scione maculipennis, are tenacious and vicious biters, but pretty in coloration. Note the genus Pangonius is not present in the New World. |

this shows that I know nothing from new world. Last time I did a mistake when we saw a tachinid (from new world) and I thought that was a sarcophagid. for old world would be a sarcophagid.  |
