I fail to identify this Ulidiidae. In the manual of palaearctic diptera the first point in the key is if vein R1 has bristles, I don't see them, but then I end up with Seioptera which should be incorrect. Could it be a Tetanops with bare R1?

At light on the shore of lake Buir Nuur in Mongolia, 1th of June 2024.

A Timia (s.str.) sp. -- one of the many. The genus needs revision and the photos are not show the face anterior view.

The problem of the Manual is that the subfamily Ulidiinae (then considered to be a family) has never been written, so try to use Hennig 1940, though Zaitzev and Galinskaya have described a few new Timia since them, including the Mongolian ones.

Thank you! That explains why I often have problems using the key in manual of palaearctic diptera! I thought Otitidae and Ulidiidae were the same.

I tried keying with Hennig 1949 and ended up with Timia protuberans. I could exclude the species described by Galinskaya. Unfortunately I don't have Zaitzev 1984, I will try to get it from the library.

See attached some extra photos from the head:

Generally, potuberans must have 2 black marks below the antennal grooves (uniformly yellow here) and 3 whitish pollinose vittae on the frons (not visible here, but looks like frons is uniformly subshining).
